Equines in Greece today: Abuse, abandonment, and efforts to protect them | 03 Oct. 2026, 13:00

To mark World Animal Day, observed each year on 4 October, the latest episode of“Historical Walks” is dedicated to horses, donkeys, and mules.

For centuries, these animals were an integral part of human life, providing transport, working the land, carrying goods, and serving in wartime. Today, as their traditional roles have largely faded and our relationship with them has changed, how do we treat them—and what responsibilities do we have toward them?

Joining the program are equine veterinarians Nina Zisopoulou and Vasilis Papatheodorou, along with Thanasis Cheliotis, president of the Greek Equine Protection Society (ESPI).

The program explores what equine welfare means in practice, how to recognize pain and distress even when there are no obvious signs, and what happens when a horse grows old and can no longer work or be ridden. We also look beyond the romantic image of horses roaming free to examine the reality of life for free-roaming populations in Greece.

We discuss abuse and abandonment, the importance of recognizing and reporting neglect, and the difference volunteers can make: people who rescue animals in need, nurse them back to health, and give them a second chance.
