“Narratives – Stories and Fairy Tales for Children and Adults” pays tribute to Oscar Wilde, the Irish storyteller, poet, and playwright and one of the great figures of world literature, through two much-loved stories from his collection “The Happy Prince and Other Tales,” translated and read around the world.
In the second part of the tribute, the program presents “The Selfish Giant,” one of Wilde’s best-known fairy tales, on Saturday, 24 October 2026, from 19:00 to 20:00 Athens time on Voice of Greece. The episode is dedicated to the work of Floga, the Association of Parents of Children with Cancer.
Both stories appear in “The Happy Prince and Other Tales,” first published in London in 1888. Published in print during Wilde’s lifetime, they soon earned him recognition among readers of all ages. Through simple yet powerful prose, the celebrated author explores enduring moral values—love, friendship, altruism, sacrifice, renewal, and hope—while his criticism of social injustice and vanity runs throughout his work.
The depth and allegorical meaning of Wilde’s stories continue to captivate and inspire readers of all ages worldwide. “The Happy Prince” and “The Selfish Giant” also remain valuable educational resources for students and teachers around the world and are still taught today.
In the final part of the program, listeners will hear the story again in Wilde’s native English, read by voice artist and actor Elliot Fitzpatrick, from the series “Classic Audiobook with Elliot – Bedtime Audiobook Stories.”
This episode is dedicated to the work of Floga, the Association of Parents of Children with Cancer; to young Spyridon, who loves “The Selfish Giant”; and to all the children of our own Floga, their siblings and families, and the doctors, caregivers, and psychologists who stand beside them. Together, they each play their part in keeping the Giant’s garden forever in bloom and, above all, filled with children’s smiles.
The first part of the tribute aired on Voice of Greece on 17 October 2026.
Produced and presented by Maria Karagiannaki Iona
Broadcast (Part II of the Tribute): Saturday 24 October 2026, 19:00-20:00 Athens time
