Criminology and the Crime Genre | 28 Apr. 2025, 22:00

On Monday, April 28, from 22:00 to 23:00 Athens time (with a repeat broadcast on Tuesday, April 29, from 04:00 to 05:00), the program “Our Town” delves into the world of Criminology and the Crime genre.

The episode will explore how the science of criminology influences and enriches the narrative arc of crime fiction. From the “little grey cells” of Hercule Poirot to the forensic laboratories of modern-day criminal investigations—the CSI units familiar from film and television—and the autopsy rooms of forensic pathologists, we trace the evolution of investigative storytelling.

Joining the discussion are author Chrysa Spyropoulou, criminology professors Giannis Panousis and Christina Zarafonitou, and Ioanna Petridou, director of the Crime Fiction Festival. Together, they will consider: Does the discipline of science, with all its methods and tools, constrain the imagination of detectives and writers, or does it, rather, equip them with the means to ground their stories in compelling evidence and rich detail?

Do writers, even unconsciously, weave criminological insights into their work—insights into the psychological, social, and moral forces that shape not only the perpetrator but the victim as well?

A special broadcast that promises to shed light on the many intricate and fascinating dimensions of the crime genre.

The program will also feature selected music from films with related themes.
