Hercules Economou and his listeners – fellow travellers will be welcoming 2025 with a week-long tribute to tarantella, this beautiful dance style that has originated from Southern Italy and especially from the Griko-speaking villages of the Salento area.
On Monday, 30.12 we will be getting our first taste of the genre’s magnificent atmosphere with ‘Kalos Irtate’, a 2007 live recording featuring colossal artists such as Ghetonia, Roberto Licci, Giovanni Avantaggiato, Cinzia Villani, Costas Thomaidis and, of course, Encardia!
On Tuesday, 31.12, we will be bidding farewell to 2024 with new folk from Southern Italy and specifically from Naples and Salento, with notable artists such as Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare, I Calanti, Mediterranti and Aratos Taranta.
On Wednesday, we will be celebrating the arrival of the new year with excerpts from La Notte della Taranta, Italy’s biggest music festival that takes place every year in Salento. Prepare to dance endlessly with pizzicas performed live on the stage of one of the world’s most impressive folk music gatherings.
On Thursday, 02.01, we will be remembering the massive contribution of Ghetonia, a band that has been pivotal in the popularisation of Griko-speaking songs and culture, and how their repertoire inspired Greek artists as well, including the Vougioukli sisters, Katerina Papadopoulou and Alkinoos Ioannidis.
Finally, on Friday, 03.01, we conclude our tribute to tarantellas with uplifting tunes performed by Greek music artists, such as Tatianna Zografou and Tania Tsanaklidou, while also celebrating the collaboration of Savina Yannatou with Ludovico Einaudi and the discography of Encardia band.
