The week from July 28 to August 1 aboard GME, Voice of Greece’s English-speaking broadcast about Greek song, is dedicated to Greece’s most prominent composer, Mikis Theodorakis. The occasion? The celebration of 100 years of his presence in our musical and social affairs, as he was born on July 29, 1925.
On Monday, we will be exploring instrumental versions of his songs, recorded by leading virtuosos such as Nicos, Stavros Pazarentzis, Vassilis Saleas, Manolis Androulidakis and John Williams.
On Tuesday, the timelessness of Mikis’ creations will be highlighted through electronic remixes of his classics by DJs and artists of a younger generation.
The global status of Theodorakis will be celebrated on Wednesday, with recordings in Italian, Dutch and German by international divas such as Milva, Liesbeth List, Gisela May and Edmonda Aldini.
Following the same logic, GME’s track list on Thursday consists of Mikis’ songs recorded by massive global stars such as The Beatles, Shirley Bassey, Edith Piaf, Dalida and Arja Sajonmaa, in English, French and Swedish.
Finally, on Friday we will be enjoying some modern studio and live recordings of covers of Theodorakis’ songs performed by exceptional Greek vocalists such as Vassilis Papakonstantinou Gerasimos Andreatos, Kalliopi Vetta, Giannis Dionysiou and Despoina Rafail.
