Uncovering the Unknown Holocaust and Prejudices Against Roma | 03 Aug. 2024, 13:00

August 2nd marks the Memorial Day of the Roma Holocaust, a lesser-known tragedy where around half a million Roma were systematically exterminated by the Nazis during World War II. Shedding light on this dark episode in global history is a crucial step in combating discrimination.

This Saturday, August 3, at 1:00 PM Athens time, “Historical Walks” will engage in a discussion with three young Greek Roma who are part of the European Equirom program fighting anti-Gypsyism. They will share the Roma history through their personal narratives. Petros Philippidis, a sociologist, Spyros Bakas, a journalism student, and Stavros Gouvannis, a student and representative of Unicef, will illustrate how they and many other Roma pursued education and are now actively challenging the ingrained prejudices against their community in Greek society.

Education and personal connections are key, according to our guests. “Get to know us,” they emphasize, as the only way to break down stereotypes.

Edited, produced, and presented by Marilena Katsimi
Broadcast: Saturday, August 3, at 1:00 PM Athens time
