Marianthi Kaplanoglou, professor of Folklore Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) will be a guest on “Saturday Shift” the two-hour weekend special edition of the show “Fair Winds and Following Seas” with Antonis Karagiannakis on Saturday, December 21, at 8:00 AM Athens time (with a replay at 8:00 PM).
Ms. Kaplanoglou takes us on a journey into the wonderful world of traditions, exploring the Greek customs and rituals of Christmas, New Year, and Epiphany. In her vivid and straightforward manner, she describes various Greek customs: the carols sung in different regions of Greece, the Christmas tree, the first-footing tradition, seasonal delicacies, the Vasilopita (New Year’s cake), the Cross ceremony at sea, the little Christmas boat, festive preparations, and much more. All of this is shared in the spirit of Christmas, accompanied by carols and sea-themed songs.
