“The Children of the Dictatorship”: special broadcast for the anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising with guest Kostis Kornetis | 16 Nov. 2024, 13:00

In honor of the anniversary of the Polytechnic Uprising, “Historical Walks” with Marilena Katsimi welcome historian Kostis Kornetis, author of the acclaimed book The Children of the Dictatorship, for a discussion on the events and myths surrounding the collective memory of post-junta Greece.

Kornetis, who was not a “protagonist” of the era but analyzes it from a historical distance, will discuss how the Greek experience of dictatorship connects with the international framework of the 1960s, going beyond the image of a “unique case.”

The author provides a comprehensive, international perspective on Greece during the dictatorship and the youth of that period, describing how the dynamics of the time—with influences from abroad, youthful values, and political contradictions—created a new culture that brought the student movement into conflict with the regime and shaped the social fabric of post-junta Greece.

Kornetis also selects the songs featured in this tribute, which transport us back to the atmosphere of 1973, Greece’s own “May ’68,” as the author suggests.

Produced and presented by Marilena Katsimi
Broadcast: Saturday, November 16, at 13:00 (Athens time)
