Tribute and Farewell to Yannis Markopoulos by Voice of Greece radio

The creative output of Yannis Markopoulos on modern Greek music is indisputable. Apart from his numerous song cycles based on setting famous Greek poems to music, Markopoulos excelled in symphonic music, oratorios, and music for film and theater.

Voice of Greece Radio bids farewell to the visionary modern Greek composer, with a series of special tribute episodes and archival recordings.
More specifically:


On Sunday June 11, Aggelos Stathopoulos will take his listeners for ‘’a stroll around the musical alleyways of Yannis Markopoulos’’ during his show Greek Coffee Shop Yiannis ‘Bach’ Spyropoulos will also be there as a guest and old-time collaborator of Markopoulos, and he will talk about his personality and his oeuvre.

This week’s episodes of Greek Music Express with Hercules Economou will be dedicated to the compositions of Yannis Markopoulos. This radio tribute is specifically created in English having in mind the Greeks who are living abroad, including 3rd and 4th generation Greeks who might not be at ease with the Greek language, as well as thousands of Philhellenes.

Finally, as part of his radio show Journeys Basking in Greek Light, Giannis Papoutsakis will present a series of four special edition recordings where the composer himself has selected some of what he considers to be his most characteristics songs and melodies from his overall body of work, dedicating them to Greeks abroad. It should be noted that the composer had a special affection for Greeks abroad and the Voice of Greece radio station (Shortly before his passing, he had requested for this series of radio recordings to be retransmitted.)
