On Monday, March 24, from 22:00 to 23:00 Athens time, “Our Town” will present a tribute to Giorgos Sarantaris. This remarkable poet and thinker was cherished in a unique way by poetry lovers, leaving behind a powerful poetic legacy. Some of Greece’s greatest poets wrote about him, including Odysseas Elytis, who considered him his mentor.
The program will explore Sarantaris’ philosophy on art and life, his depiction of Athens in his poetry, the theme of silence in his work, and his reflections on poetry itself. Guests include philosopher and writer Sotiris Gounelas, poet Giorgos Markopoulos, and composer-singer Nena Venetsanou.
Actor Akillas Karazisis will read a selection of Sarantaris’ poems.
Listeners will also hear songs set to his poetry, performed by Nena Venetsanou, Kalliopi Tsoupaki, Mariza Koch, Ilias Liougos, and Flery Dantonaki, as well as rare archival recordings.
The program will also highlight the Association of Friends of Giorgos Sarantaris, an organization dedicated to preserving his legacy through publications, lectures, and events.
In a challenging era, Sarantaris’ voice remains almost transparent:
“We need noise to grasp our own presence.”
A program dedicated to all lovers of Greek poetry.
