Victoria Benouzilio: The hidden child of war | 14 Mar. 2025, 13:00

A historian and a bottle of ouzo at a family table in Switzerland. The A. Bourla Brothers Distillery on Victor Hugo Street 3 in Thessaloniki. A two-year-old girl suddenly left alone in her home in Athens when Greek policemen, collaborators of the Nazis, arrest her mother. A family, that of Stavros Ch. Oikonomakos, who will shelter and care for the child. A letter, many years later, to the “Righteous Among the Nations” association.

Based on the oral testimony of Victoria Benouzilio, “Unguarded Passage” presents a powerful radio documentary about the human stories that unfolded in March 1943 and March 1944, against the backdrop of the deportation of Greek Jews to extermination camps.

The series by Thomas Sideris takes us back to 1943, to the platforms of the Eastern Railways Station, then a year later to the Athens Synagogue, from there to the Haidari concentration camp, and finally to the platforms of Rouf railway station—places that forever marked the lives of those who managed to survive.

Featuring journalists Sofia Papadopoulou and Christos Zafeiris, as well as historian Leon Saltiel.

Research-Documentation-Presentation: Thomas Sideris

International Women’s Day: Maria Roussou on “Unguarded Passage” | 07 Mar. 2025, 13:00
The radio series “Afilachti Diavasi” honors International Women’s Day with a special episode dedicated to an exceptional woman, Maria Roussou, director of the Public Library of Lefkada. Her journey led her from East to West, as she moved from Samos to Lefkada in the early 1990s. Tireless, methodical, and above all, with an inexhaustible love for the library, she managed to turn a public institution into a landmark for the island of Aristotle Valaoritis and Angelos Sikelianos—an island where poetry has always met music and Italian culture is deeply woven into daily life. Maria Roussou laid the foundations to transform ... Read more
