A Gendered Perspective on Greek History: Intellectual Women and the Greek Revolution | 30 May 2026

“Historical Walks” with Marilena Katsimi continues the exploration of history through a gendered perspective, focusing on the world of intellectual women from the pre-revolutionary years and the Greek Revolution of 1821 through the establishment of the modern Greek state. Women who wrote, translated, corresponded, participated in Philhellenic networks, secret societies, and intellectual circles, claiming a place in public life at a time when women’s presence was considered strictly limited.

The guest of the program is historian Elisavet Papalexopoulou, PhD of the European University Institute in Florence, with whom we discuss the women who actively participated in the intellectual and political ferment of the era.

Through archival sources, memoirs, letters, and testimonies, a lesser-known side of History comes to light: women who sought access to knowledge, public expression, and political action. Women who believed that the creation of a new, European-oriented Greek state could also mean a better place for themselves within society.

The program is accompanied musically by works by female composers of the period, who also remained on the margins of History, as women at the time were considered “acceptable” mainly as performers, but not as composers.

Produced and presented by Marilena Katsimi
