On Wednesday, 29 July, at 22:00 Athens time, “Remarkable Personalities” present Part Two of the interview with retired Lieutenant General Dimitris Alevromageiros, Honorary Inspector General of the Hellenic Army, who was on the front line during the dramatic events of July and August 1974 in Cyprus.
In the second part of the interview to Stavroula Karali, Lieutenant General Alevromageiros takes Voice of Greece listeners back to the harrowing hours of the invasion, from dawn on 20 July, when the Turkish forces began landing on the island, to the fierce battles fought in defense of Nicosia.
Mr. Alevromageiros remembers the men he lost in battle and speaks about the chaos of the first few hours, the shortages and the critical decisions that had to be made amid the fighting. He also recounts the self-sacrifice of the Greek and Cypriot soldiers who resisted the Turkish invaders.
The Honorary Inspector General of the Hellenic Army recalls people and moments, recounts harrowing incidents from the battlefield, reveals acts of heroism that remained out of the public eye and honors the memory of those who fell defending Cypriot soil.
He also offers his perspective on the political and military responsibility for the tragedy, Greece’s level of preparedness, the role of foreign powers, the plight of the missing and the lessons that remain relevant more than half a century later.
Mr. Alevromageiros also recalls a moment from July 1974 that has remained deeply etched in his memory. When he visited his wounded soldiers in the hospital, a young fighter who had lost his leg in battle asked him: “Commander, are we still holding the same line?”
