Giannis Vasilakakos is the “Poet of the Week” | 11–17 May 2026

Seven poems every week, one Greek poem each day, travel through the frequencies of Voice of Greece to every corner of the world where Greek voices can be heard.
The week from 11 to 17 May 2026 is dedicated to the poet Giannis Vasilakakos.


Yiannis Vasilakakos was born in Agios Georgios, Skala Lakonias. He holds a Master’s degree and a PhD in Modern Greek Literature from the University of Melbourne, a Bachelor of Letters from the University of New England, and a diploma in Interpretation and Translation from RMIT University. A distinguished academic and specialist in Modern Greek Studies, he taught for 30 years at Deakin University and RMIT University in Melbourne. At RMIT, he served as Head of the Greek Program in the Department of Interpretation and Translation. He was also a co-founding member of Australian Multicultural Literature at the Australia Council for the Arts in 1983, and twice elected coordinator of the Cultural Network of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) for Oceania (1999–2006). He has published 27 books across a wide range of genres — including fiction, theatre, poetry, biographies, aphorisms, essays and critical studies — as well as six translated works.
