A few hours before the Epitaphios procession, we explore distinctive customs from every corner of Greece. We will talk about the Epitaphios procession in Kaminia, Hydra, with Mayor Giorgos Koukoudakis; about the meeting of the three Epitaphioi in Syros with Deputy Mayor for Tourism Giannis Voutsinos; and then we head to Karpathos, where, together with Fotini Chalkia-Kazamia, Head of the Mayor’s Press Office, we will discuss the island’s rituals and the importance of commemorating the dead. Finally, in Kavala, we speak with Deputy Mayor for Culture Apostolos Moumtzakis about the burning of Judas.

The English-language music program of Voice of Greece draws a parallel between Easter and Christ’s sacrifice and the sacrifice of the 200 Resistance fighters executed in Kaisariani in 1944. Through songs inspired by Holy Week, alongside references to places of imprisonment and execution, the program moves from Ritsos and Theodorakis’ “Epitaphios” to works by Gatsos and Papadimitriou, and from Themeli and Kougioumtzis to songs dedicated to Kaisariani and Akronafplia—honoring self-sacrifice in both its religious and secular dimensions.
