Voice of Greece is adjusting its programming to rebroadcast the poems recorded in its studio in March 2023 by poet and translator Nick Germanacos, who passed away on Tuesday, 24 March 2026.
Nick Germanacos was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1940. The son of a father raised in Wales and a Cypriot mother, he spent his childhood between these two countries. In 1965, he moved to Greece as a supervising English instructor. In Athens, he became part of the city’s vibrant literary circles, which he had first encountered through the Greek-American translator Kimon Friar. He developed close relationships with many prominent writers and poets — including Yannis Ritsos, Thanasis Valtinos, Stratis Tsirkas, Margarita Liberaki, Kostas Tachtsis, Nikos Kasdaglis, and Margarita Karapanou — several of whom he translated into English, helping to introduce contemporary Greek literature to an international audience.
Following the restoration of democracy, he settled on the island of Kalymnos, where he lived for several years, teaching Modern Greek Literature and History to American students as part of a university study program. He later relocated to the hometown of his second wife, poet and visual artist Ann Germanacos, in San Francisco, where he lived until the end of his life.
His poetry collection “Ora et Labora” was published in the United States in 2020 and received praise from distinguished literary scholars. In Greece, two of his poetry collections have been published in Greek by Melani Editions, translated by Eleni Karra.
The week from 30 March 2026 to 05 April 2026 is dedicated to poet Nick Germanacos.
