Professor Konstantinos Grivas, who teaches in the Division of War Theory and Analysis at the Hellenic Army Academy, is the guest on Wednesday, 05 November 2025, at 22:00 (Athens time), on the Voice of Greece program “Remarkable Personalities” with Stavroula Karali.
Mr. Grivas, author of books such as “War in the 21st Century” and “The Awakening of the Nightmare: Nuclear War in the 21st Century”, shares with Voice of Greece listeners the dark pages of the Cold War and addresses a crucial question: are we now closer than ever to a nuclear war?
He recounts the dramatic events between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cuban Missile Crisis — a confrontation of terrifying intensity. The guest also revisits the tense autumn of 1983, when humanity came dangerously close to nuclear catastrophe due to a series of accidents.
Professor Grivas further discusses the political dimensions of the Olympic Games, describing them as “politically polarized,” yet noting that “athletic competition during the Cold War acted as a safety valve — releasing tension.”
Finally, the professor of the Hellenic Army Academy reflects on the present, addressing whether history repeats itself and to what extent the danger of a new Cold War looms on the horizon.
