On Sunday, 21 June, at 10:00 Athens time, “Greek Voices – Greece in Argentina”, hosted by Dr Christina Tsardikou, President of the Greek Cultural Organization Nostos, welcomes Margarita Larriera.
Margarita Larriera, a historian, educator, and translator from Montevideo, Uruguay, is one of the leading figures in the promotion of the Greek language and Greek culture throughout Latin America.
Since 1977, she has devoted herself to the study and teaching of the Greek language. Her long association with the Maria Tsakos Foundation saw her serve as a teacher, Director of Studies, and later Director of the Foundation for more than twenty years. Today, she holds the title of Honorary President.
Over the years, she also collaborated closely with the Embassy of Greece in Uruguay and served as President of the Uruguay Chapter of the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis, contributing significantly to the dissemination of the great Cretan writer’s work.
Larriera has translated, interpreted, and presented numerous cultural and academic events, while also participating in the translation of the award-winning publication The Greeks of Latin America. Since 2005, she has produced and hosted the radio program Journey to Ithaca, which promotes Greek culture throughout Uruguay, Argentina, and internationally via the internet.
Her longstanding contribution has been recognized with numerous distinctions, including the title of Ambassador of Hellenism and honorary memberships in international cultural organizations. In 2024, she was awarded the decoration of Commander of the Order of Beneficence by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
