Myths, Misconceptions, and Uncomfortable Truths in Greek History | 17 & 24 Jan. 2026 | 13:00

How much of what we believe we know about Greek history is actually true—and how much is myth, repeated so often that it hardens into certainty? In the new episodes of “Historical Walks“, we embark on a thought-provoking journey through time, revisiting familiar historical narratives and looking at them anew. Events long taken for granted are re-examined, revealing that some never happened at all—or did not happen in the way we were taught.

The guest of the program is historian and author Stavros Panagiotidis, on the occasion of the publication of his two widely discussed books by Kedros:

Myths, Misconceptions, and Uncomfortable Truths of Greek History (Volume I, 2023)
Myths, Misconceptions, and Uncomfortable Truths of Greek History 2 (Volume II, 2024)

From antiquity to the present day, myths have shown remarkable endurance. Panagiotidis returns to well-known “certainties,” familiar phrases, and stories we have all heard, re-reading them through evidence, critical distance, and a compelling narrative voice—an approach that turned both volumes into bestsellers.

In conversation with Stavros Panagiotidis, we explore the myths of the Kaiadas, the Secret School, and the Dance of Zalongo, before moving on to later episodes such as the ‘Sink the Hora’ moment of the 1970s and the legendary “Marika’s dolmades.” phrase. Along the way, we uncover how seemingly minor stories can conceal major historical misunderstandings.

The discussion focuses on how myths are created, why they persist, what purposes they serve, and why certain “good stories” often prove more resilient than historical fact itself.
