Nikolaos Ouzounoglou and Antonis Deriziotis are this week’s “Remarkable Personalities” | 03 Sept. 2025, 22:00

On Wednesday, 3 September 2025, at 22:00 Athens time, commemorating the 70th anniversary of the September Pogrom and the 60th anniversary of the mass expulsions of Greek residents of Istanbul – two tragic events with immense consequences for Hellenism of the City – the Voice of Greece program “Remarkable Personalities”, hosted by Stavroula Karali, welcomes Professor Emeritus Nikolaos Ouzounoglou, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, and President of the Ecumenical Federation of Constantinopolitans, and Assistant Professor Antonis D. Deriziotis, Department of Turkish and Modern Asian Studies, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Our guests reflect on the orchestrated and devastating September 1955 pogrom, shedding light on its real causes, the fabricated pretexts, and the tragic losses inflicted on the Greek community of Istanbul. They also examine the mass expulsions of 1964–1965, another severe blow to Hellenism in the City.

Further, Professors Ouzounoglou and Deriziotis emphasize the resilience of today’s Greek community in Istanbul – upholding language, faith, and cultural traditions through both flourishing times and moments of hardship.

Finally, Professor Ouzounoglou discusses the upcoming International Conference, to be held on 19–20 September 2025 under the auspices of the Ecumenical Federation of Constantinopolitans, marking both the 70-year anniversary of the Pogrom and the 60-year anniversary of the mass expulsions.
