Pontic Hellenism and the Remembrance Day of the Pontic Greek Genocide | 20 May 2026, 22:00

Konstantinos Tsahouridis — artist, researcher, and academic — is the featured guest on Voice of Greece’s weekly program “Remarkable Personalities” on Wednesday, 20 May, at 22:00 Athens time. Speaking with Stavroula Karali, he reflects on the Pontus of memory and the heart in a program dedicated to the history and culture of Pontic Hellenism, which was uprooted and severely tested, yet managed to preserve its identity through music, language, song, and tradition.

The discussion begins with Mr. Tsahouridis’ personal and artistic journey, his relationship with music, his studies and research in ethnomusicology, as well as his family’s deep connection to the Pontic musical tradition. A tradition that both he and his brother, Matthaios Tsahouridis, came to know through their grandfather, who always kept the Pontic lyra beside the family icon stand.

At the heart of the program are the lost homelands of the Black Sea region, the persecutions, the Genocide, uprooting, and refugee experience, explored through personal memories, historical references, and stories passed down from generation to generation.

Mr. Tsahouridis also speaks about 19 May, the day of remembrance for the thousands of victims who were massacred, uprooted, and displaced. A day of particular historical and symbolic significance, officially recognized by the Hellenic Parliament in 1994 as the Remembrance Day of the Pontic Greek Genocide.

A special place in the program is also given to Konstantinos Tsahouridis’ musical selections, featuring songs that keep alive the memory and emotional legacy of Pontic Hellenism.
