The forgotten prisoners of the Asia Minor Catastrophe – Part Τwo | 16 Sept. 2026, 22:00

On Wednesday, 16 September 2026, at 22:00 Athens time, Voice of Greece’s “Remarkable Personalities” continues its tribute to the Asia Minor Catastrophe of September 1922. Stavroula Karali welcomes historian and professor at the Hellenic Army Academy Nikos Kanellopoulos, co-author with Nikos Tombros of the book «Η Τραγική Ιστορία των Ελλήνων Αιχμαλώτων στη Μικρά Ασία 1919-1924», published by Minoas Publications.

Part II focuses primarily on the prisoners’ repatriation. In what condition did they return? How were they received by Greek society? How did they attempt to rebuild their lives and reintegrate after everything they had endured? And why did their story fade from public memory within a relatively short period?

The discussion also explores the National Schism, which persisted even under the conditions of captivity; the use of prisoners for propaganda purposes; the stance of the press; the social and professional reintegration of those who returned; and the profound psychological trauma that accompanied many of them for the rest of their lives.

Voice of Greece and “Remarkable Personalities” present a historical tribute to those who survived captivity, as well as to those who never returned.

Produced and presented by Stavroula Karali
