On Wednesday, 8 July, at 22:00 Athens time, the Voice of Greece program “Remarkable Personalities” continues its journey through Greek rock music, guided by the stories of the people who created it and the songs that left their mark on entire generations.
In the second part of this special tribute, Stavroula Karali once again welcomes journalist and author Giannis Alexiou to discuss his book Pioneers of Greek Rock (Ogdoo Music Group Editions), continuing a conversation that spans more than three decades of musical creativity, from the mid-1960s through the 1990s.
This episode focuses on the period when the Greek rock scene developed its own mature identity, broadened its audience, and entered into a creative dialogue with other musical genres, without losing its social character or the power of its message.
Through music excerpts and stories, the program highlights the work of artists who defined the era, including Fatme and Nikos Portokaloglou, Nikolas Asimos, Vasilis Papakonstantinou, Nikos Ziogalas, Lakis with the High Revers (Lakis Papadopoulos), the Katsimihas Brothers, Termites, Pyx Lax, Ypogeia Revmata, Diafana Krina, and Endelecheia.
The discussion goes beyond the music itself, exploring the stories behind the songs through the testimonies of the artists themselves and the many years of research conducted by journalist and author Giannis Alexiou. It also examines the artists’ creative pursuits, their social and political references, and the evolution of Greek rock from small music venues to large-scale concerts and widespread popularity. At the same time, it looks at the collaborations between rock musicians and artists from other musical genres, demonstrating that the 1980s were a period of creative exchange and musical openness.
