Voice of Greece bids farewell to the distinguished scholar of Byzantine studies Eleni Glykatzi-Ahrweiler, who passed away at the age of 100, airing a special broadcast of the program “Invitation to Lunch” with Eleni Karali, on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, from 12:00 to 13:00 (Athens time). The program features a remarkable conversation with a woman-symbol, who succeeded in becoming one of the finest ambassadors of Greece and the Greek spirit.

Eleni Glykatzi-Ahrweiler was the first woman to serve as President of the Department of History at the Sorbonne and, in 1976, the first woman elected Rector of the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne in its 700-year history. She also served as Visiting Professor at Harvard University and was awarded honorary doctorates by numerous universities. She was Rector of the Academy and Chancellor of the Universities of Paris, President of the Georges Pompidou Foundation, President of Paris I University, President of the University of Europe, and of many other institutions, managing to bridge the continuum of Hellenism — ancient, Byzantine and modern.
