On Sunday, 11 October 2026, at 20:00 Athens time, Voice of Greece broadcasts a musical work dedicated to Nikos Kazantzakis and Domenikos Theotokopoulos — El Greco. The texts were selected by Makis Nalbantoglou, with musical settings and arrangements by Areti Kokkinou.
Entitled “He passed judgment … with his paintbrush,” («Ἒκαμε κρίση … μέ τον χρωστήρα του») the work brings together the verse epilogue from Nikos Kazantzakis’s “Report to Greco” and five sonnets by Spanish poets about El Greco, creating a unified musical tribute to the great painter.
Drawing on Kazantzakis and Theotokopoulos’s shared Cretan roots and restless creative spirit, the music blends Greek tradition with elements of medieval and contemporary Spanish music, taking listeners on a journey through poetry, painting, and sound.
Grigoris Valtinos recites and interprets the texts, while Vasilis Gisdakis and Ioanna Forti perform the songs, accompanied by eight distinguished musicians.
