On Sunday, 22 June 2025, at 20:00 Athens time, Voice of Greece will broadcast worldwide the concert “Zorbas, the Greek” by Mikis Theodorakis, recorded in April 2025 at the packed Cairo Opera House hall, in the presence of Egypt’s Greek community.
This special performance is a collaboration between the ERT National Symphony Orchestra and the A Cappella Choir of the Cairo Opera, under the baton of conductor Michalis Economou, with mezzo-soprano Nefeli Kotseli as soloist.
“Zorbas” is a cornerstone of modern Greek culture. Originally composed for Michael Cacoyannis’s 1964 film, the music soon took on a life of its own. Theodorakis later transformed it into a sweeping suite for orchestra and choir, adding songs and choral parts based on poetry, which deepened the work’s emotional and narrative power. The broadcast marks World Music Day and commemorates 100 years since the birth of Mikis Theodorakis—a tribute to one of Greece’s most iconic composers.
Broadcast: Sunday, 22 June 2025, at 20:00 (Athens time) on Voice of Greece.
