We turn the clock back to 1870…
We encounter the infamous Arvanitakis brothers—feared bandit leaders of the time. They carry out a daring abduction in Syntagma Square, right outside the “Grand Hotel d’Angleterre” (as the “Great Britain” Hotel was then called), kidnapping a group of foreign travelers. Among the hostages are English barons and Italian nationals.
The abduction lasts for days, becomes front-page news in the international press, and sparks a diplomatic crisis between Greece, England, and Italy—ultimately leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Zaimis’s government.
The hunt for the bandits ends in a shocking bloodbath: the hostages are murdered, and seven members of the gang are killed. Foreign newspapers label Greece a land of semi-barbarians, a disgrace to civilization, and a haven for bandits and pirates…
Chilling testimonies and a detailed account of the events as they truly unfolded, presented by the show “Time in Greece” with Nikolas Angelidis.
