Dimitris K. Alexopoulos, author of the book “Relentless Radio” (Ασίγαστος Ασύρματος), shares the incredible story of his grandfather, Dimitris, who came from mountainous Phthiotis and achieved his dream of becoming a sailor, even though he had never seen the sea as a child.
He became a wireless operator in the Navy, experiencing World War I and the Asia Minor Catastrophe. During World War II, he was part of the resistance organization “Omiros” (Homer), which collaborated with the Allies.
Risking his life and that of his family, he was responsible for radio communications in occupied Athens. Thanks to the efforts of radio operators like him, many Allied operations were successfully carried out in Greece. For his bravery and courage, including being imprisoned and tortured by the occupiers, he was honored with the Golden Cross of Valor and other distinctions. However, he kept his story well-hidden until his grandson, Dimitris K. Alexopoulos, revealed it to us.
