Captain Nikos Thermos from the village of Englouvi in Lefkada takes the helm of the show “Fair Winds and Following Seas”.
He shares his life story at sea and aboard ships. “I first embarked in 1981, right when Andreas (Papandreou) came to power, without knowing even five words of English. I went alone to Hamburg and wrote the name of the ship, Vingeren, on a piece of cardboard. Luckily, a couple helped me find my way,” Captain Nikos recalls. He continues, “I fell in love with the profession of a sailor and captain. I have no regrets about my choice, and I would make the same decision today. My longest stint at sea was 45 months because we had bought a house and needed to pay it off.”
His favorite ports included Trieste, with its history, buildings, architecture, Greek community, and St. Nicholas. He also loved Japan for the way the Japanese work and operate. Overall, Captain Nikos enjoyed traveling, the sea, ships, meeting people, experiencing different cultures, and learning about the world.
