”Dogwatch” documentary director Gregoris Rentis on ”Fair Winds and Following Seas” | 17 Feb. 2024

Grigoris Rentis, director of the documentary film “Dogwatch”, is the guest on this episode of ‘Saturday Shift‘, Saturday’s special edition of the show ”Fair Winds and Following Seas” with Antonis Karagiannakis.

“Dogwatch”, his debut feature film, has made an excellent run at international festivals, winning the Best Photography Award at the Moscow Documentary Festival and the Silver Alexander at the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival.

The film is about mercenaries who protect ships from pirate attacks. Its creator mentions this particularly currently relevant film, about the piracy in the Gulf of Aden, which preceded the attacks by the Houthi rebels.

It is a Greek-French production, focuseing on the mercenaries who protect the ships from pirates: “Mercenaries essentially board the ship without it stopping and stay on the ship to protect it for the route that is dangerous to the area known as the high risk area. For more than a decade, ships crossing the danger zone off Somalia have been recruiting mercenaries to protect them against pirates. Today the attacks have decreased, but the mercenaries face a new problem: the lack of action,” the filmmaker says.
