Convicted and sentenced to death for a crime he insists he did not commit, Greek-American Panagiotis (Peter) Papasavvas has spent the past 29 years in New Jersey’s prison system. After years on death row and a long series of legal challenges, he is now serving a life sentence.
For nearly three decades, Papasavvas has fought to clear his name and regain his freedom. His dream is simple: to leave prison behind and reunite in Florida with his father and sister, who continue to wait for him.
Nikolas Aggelidis first met Papasavvas in 1999, when he was still on death row, during a visit conducted under the strict security measures of a New Jersey maximum-security prison. At the time, he also spoke with Papasavvas’s parents. His mother has since passed away, but listeners will hear excerpts from that earlier interview, capturing her anxiety, hope, and determination to stand by her son.

Now, 29 years later, the two meet again. Still seeking to overturn his conviction, Papasavvas continues his legal battle and appeals for support as he pursues a future beyond prison walls.
A compelling and deeply human story, exclusively on Voice of Greece and “Time in Greece” with Nikolas Aggelidis.
