Katina Chantzara is a woman-symbol of resistance and sacrifice. She was the only woman among the 120 Resistance fighters executed on the Bloody Good Friday of 1944 in Agrinio. Born into a large and impoverished family, she was orphaned at a young age and worked tirelessly as a domestic servant to help raise her siblings. Left without support or opportunities, she was eventually forced into prostitution in order to survive.
She joined the Greek Resistance through the ranks of EAM–ELAS and distributed food aid through the organization National Solidarity to people suffering from hunger. In 1943, she was arrested by the German collaborators, tortured, but continued her resistance activity undeterred, fighting against both the occupying forces and their local collaborators.
The story of Katina Chantzara later became a book and remains a shining, unconquerable example for our times.
