Capt. Giorgos Matthaios: “My paintings are steeped in salt and turpentine”

Capt. Giorgos Matthaios, from the village of Sineti on Andros, speaks to “Fair Winds and Following Seas” on Voice of Greece.

On the occasion of his solo exhibition, “Land and Sea,” which runs from 2 to 20 August 2026 at the Empirikeio High School of Andros, the captain takes us into his world of the sea, seafarers and ships.

“I served the sea as a captain and as an executive at shipping companies,” Capt. Giorgos says with emotion. “Now that I have retired, I still love it and continue to serve it through my paintings. My work is steeped in salt and turpentine, capturing ships, waves and seafarers on canvas with love and nostalgia.”
