Captain Nomikos Kazonis on “Fair Winds and Following Seas” (Part I) | 07 May 2025

Captain Nomikos Kazonis, originally from Kalymnos, speaks on “Fair Winds And Following Seas”.

His father was a sponge diver, and with his sponge boat he raised three children. Captain Nomikos grew up surrounded by the sea and grew to love it. That love eventually led him to pursue a professional career at sea, becoming a captain. “You have to love and respect the sea when you sail it, in order to succeed. That’s exactly what I did. I owe a great deal to my wife—for who I am and for everything I’ve accomplished. A seafarer’s wife has a very difficult role, and that must be recognized,” he says.

He embarked on his first voyage without his father’s knowledge, as his father did not want his son to follow a life at sea. His first assignment was in 1970, in Panama, aboard the M/V MARATHONIA, where he stayed for 19 months. After just a ten-day break, he continued on the M/V RIO for another 24 months—43 consecutive months at sea in total.
