Research special: Sports aviation tragedies, Part II | 05 May 2026

A major special investigation by the program “Time in Greece” and Nikolas Angelidis examines all the major air disasters connected to the world of sports. The series documents, in chronological order, the events — large and small — that shocked the international sporting community.

In the second part of the investigation, the program begins with the 1969 tragedy involving The Strongest football club of Bolivia. The following year saw two separate disasters involving the American football teams of Wichita State University and Marshall University.

The program also revisits the 1972 Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crash in the Andes — later adapted into films — where the surviving passengers ultimately resorted to cannibalism in order to stay alive. Nearly the entire rugby team of Old Christians Club from Uruguay perished in the disaster.

The investigation concludes with the 1977 plane crash that claimed the lives of the basketball team of University of Evansville.
