“Like Odysseus” with Nikol Liakostavrou
A tribute to the remarkable journey of the historic cargo boat Evangelistria — one of the last surviving Aegean sailing vessels of the perama type.
Perama boats were traditional commercial sailing ships, the final descendants of a maritime tradition that remains largely undocumented in historical research. No comparable vessel type has survived elsewhere in the world. Some evidence suggests that similar ships may have sailed the Aegean during Byzantine times, though this remains unconfirmed.
Maritime historian Prof. P. Throckmorton noted that the vessel’s construction recalls both 1st-century BC ships and those of the Byzantine era.
