“Faraway Words” about rebetiko… in London | 07 Oct. 2025

The program hosted Georgia Karantona, PhD candidate in Children’s and Adolescent Literature at the University of Thessaly, educator at Greek community schools in London, and Director of the Greek Children’s Library of London.

The discussion was inspired by a special tribute to rebetiko music, curated by Georgia Karantona and Evdokia Michalopoulou. The event, organized by the Greek Library of London, will take place on Saturday, 11 October, marking 110 years since the birth of Vassilis Tsitsanis.

As Karantona noted, the event is already sold out, featuring among others:

  • Leon A. Nar, PhD in Modern Greek Philology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, author
  • Stelios Karagiorgos, Artistic Director of the Tsitsanis Museum
  • Dimitra Bakalgianni, actor, musicologist, and Artistic Director of Players of Ethos London
  • Students from the Greek School of St. George
A musical segment will also be part of the evening.

Karantona also spoke about the enduring legacy and timeless power of rebetiko, a genre that continues to move and inspire audiences across generations and borders.
