Today’s program is dedicated to the legendary saltadoroi (children and teenagers in occupied Athens who jumped onto moving trucks to steal food and supply starving families.)
Katerina Katsari, creator of the documentary Korona-Grammata: The Saltadoroi of Athens (Heads or Tails: The Saltadoroi of Athens) joins Voice of Greece and the show “Time in Greece” with Nikolas Angelidis in the studio.
Countless are the stories of the young boys who dared to stand up to the occupiers and their local collaborators, searching for a little food – milk, oil, even a piece of dry bread. They leapt onto moving trucks, seized what they believed rightfully belonged to them, and distributed it wherever they could, forming a spontaneous yet remarkably coordinated network of solidarity and humanity.
Most of these saltadoroi later joined the EAM Resistance, fighting the foreign and domestic enemy with all their strength.
Powerful stories of bravery, courage, and spirit from a dark era marked by hunger and death — yet also by heroic Resistance, unlike anything experienced elsewhere during those years.
