Smyrna 1922: Two Americans Who Changed History | 24 Sept. 2025

Loukas Christodoulou on “Remarkable Personalities”

Loukas Christodoulou, President of the Administrative Committee of the Center for the Study and Promotion of Asia Minor Culture of the Municipality of Nea Ionia, President of the Union of Sparta of Asia Minor, author, and researcher, was the featured guest on the program “Remarkable Personalities” on Wednesday, 24 September 2025.

Mr. Christodoulou, who has written ten historical books and has been honored by the Academy of Athens, turned his focus to the Smyrna Quay– and in particular, its darkest days in September 1922, when horror, violence, and destruction engulfed the city.

The discussion focused on two figures: U.S. Consul George Horton, who as an eyewitness recorded the tragic events in his book “The Blight of Asia”; and American pastor Asa Jennings, who, despite frail health and slight build, found the courage to remain on the Quay and succeeded in rescuing thousands of desperate Greeks from certain death.
One bore witness to history with searing testimony, the other shaped it through decisive action. Together, their stories reveal how individual choices can alter the course of history.
