Next stop on the map for the show “Time in Greece” is Migingo Island — a sliver of land in Lake Victoria, caught between Uganda and Kenya, and still disputed by the two countries. With a total area of just 2,000 square metres and a population of 500, it holds the title of the most densely populated island on the planet.
With four bars, homes, a hair salon, brothels, and most importantly, an abundant supply of fish—unlike the rest of the lake—this tiny island has even sparked conflict. But how is it governed? When did people start living there? What explains its dense population, and what makes it so peculiar?
Today, we answer all that and take you on a journey to this incredible dot on the world map, accompanied by wonderful music from the two countries that claim it—Kenya and Uganda.
