Its earliest incarnation dates back to 1850 in Corfu, where it was published under the title Ethniki kai Dimotiki Efimeris (National and Municipal Newspaper). The newspaper reappears in 1908 as a “weekly national, political and social newspaper.” The true forerunner of today’s Rizospastis then takes us to the revolutionary year of 1917, a period of profound global upheaval marked by the October Revolution.
