Giorgos Veis is the Poet of the Week 21.08.2023 – 27.08.2023

Giorgos Veis was born in Athens in 1955. Ambassador ad honorem. He studied law.
His poems have been translated into seven European languages, Indonesian and Chinese. He has worked as a literary critic since 1976. Vice President of the Hellenic Authors’ Society 2017-2019. He served in the Diplomatic Branch of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has served as Consul in New York, Consul General in Dortmund, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Macao, Embassy Counsellor in Beijing and Seoul, Chargé d’Affaires in Cameroon, with parallel accreditation in Chad, Sao Tome and Principe, Gabon, the Central African Republic and Equatorial Guinea, among others. He has served as Ambassador to Sudan, with a parallel accreditation to Somalia. In 2010 he was appointed Ambassador to Indonesia, with parallel accreditation to Malaysia, Brunei, and Timor-Leste. In addition, he has served as Ambassador – Permanent Delegate of Greece to UNESCO.
He has published 23 works, 13 of which are poetry, and 5 are translated works. He was awarded the Greek State Prize for Testimony in 2000 for his book “Asia, Asia”, the Greek State Prize for Chronicle-Testimony in 2010 for his book “From Tokyo to Khartoum” and the Greek State Prize for Chronicle-Testimony-Travel Impressions for his work Everywhere, in 2016.His poetry collection “Leptomereies Kosmon” was awarded the Lampros Porfyras Prize of the Academy of Athens in 2007.In 2012 he was awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Phoenix of the Greek Republic for his services to the diplomatic sector.In 2014 he was awarded the Poetry Prize of the Petros Charis Foundation of the Academy of Athens, for his entire body of work.
