“American Blues meets Greek Rebetiko”
On Thursday, October 10th, the show ‘Voices and Music’ with Alexis Kostas hosted Pericles Kanaris, live from the studio of Voice of Greece.
Since the start of his career, Greek music has been a great source of passion and inspiration for Pericles Kanaris. A champion of music’s communicative nature, the award-winning Greek composer has been said to have ‘changed the presentation of Greek song in Manhattan,’ with performances in major concert venues in New York (Carnegie Hall, Tribeca Arts Center, etc.) and collaborations with notable musicians from around the world.
His latest songs are settings of poems by Constantine Cavafy and T.S. Eliot, as well as contemporary creators—from Manos Eleftheriou (unpublished material) to the younger generations of Greek lyricists.
He recently returned to Athens, the city of his origin, where he now teaches the course he introduced as a professor at New York University (NYU) titled ‘Songs of the Underdog: American Blues meets Greek Rebetiko.’”
