On today’s journey, we traveled from the Caribbean to the heart of New York City.
We explored the rich history of Puerto Rico, from the Indigenous Taíno people to the birth of salsa. We connected live with Spanish Harlem and radio producer Johnny Cruz, who gave us a tour of the Spaha Salsa Gallery and its personal mementos from legendary artists.
We talked about Cruz’s radio show, which holds the attention of more than one million listeners. Joining us from New York was Dimitris Kastaris, a conductor and trombonist from Thessaloniki. We heard how he made his mark in Latin jazz and earned the name “El Griego Rumbero.” We also learned how his song of the same name made its way toward a Grammy nomination.
We answered questions from members of the Greek diaspora on all five continents who tuned in. We showed that the Greek spirit and Latin rhythm speak the same universal language.
