On Sunday, May 25, 2025, at 10:00 AM (Athens time), the show “Greeks Around the World – Greece in the United Kingdom”, hosted by Eliana Nunes, will feature Petros Karatsareas.
Dr. Petros Karatsareas is a sociolinguist and Reader in Multilingualism and Language Contact at the University of Westminster in central London. He also serves as the Course Leader for the university’s postgraduate programs in English Language and Linguistics. Beyond academia, he leads community and language advocacy with organisations like Bilingualism Matters.
His research focuses on language practices and ideologies in migration contexts, with particular emphasis on marginalised groups. A significant part of his work examines the language use and identity of Greek-speaking communities in England, including individuals of Greek, Cypriot and Albanian descent.
In this episode of “Greece in the United Kingdom”, Dr Karatsareas will discuss linguistic diversity in multicultural London, the use of Greeklish, the stigma surrounding linguistic influences and borrowings, as well as the role of language in shaping self-perception – among other topics.
