Tribute to Cypriot Artists, Part I – Rediscovering the Violárides of Cyprus | 31 May 2025, 12:00

Our Town” presents a series of broadcasts dedicated to Cypriot Artists.

On this first episode of the series, Nikoleta Demetriou, research specialist at the University of Cyprus, sheds light on the violárides—traditional Cypriot musicians who played violin and lute as a duo. These were men of modest means who provided music wherever it was needed. No ritual, celebration, or gathering was considered complete without their presence.

Following Cyprus’s independence from Britain in 1960, rapid urbanization, the collapse of traditional social structures, and the Turkish invasion led to the decline of this unique musical tradition.

Demetriou draws from oral testimonies of some of the last surviving violárides—both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots—reviving the soundscapes, festivities, and cultural life of early 20th-century Cyprus.

Rare archival recordings and traditional tunes accompany the discussion.

Broadcast: Saturday, May 31, 2025 | 12:00–13:00 (Athens time)
Repeat: Sunday, June 1, 2025 | 04:00 (Athens time)
