On Monday, 2 November 2026, at 22:00 Athens time, Voice of Greece’s “Our Town” welcomes academic Charikleia Tsokani for a discussion of her book “From Music to Noise.”
In conversation with Themis Rodamitis, she will explore the dazzling world of sound, the experience of music, tonal and atonal music, and the musicality of Cavafy’s poetry.
The discussion will focus on the relationship and contrast between organized musical sound and noise within 20th-century Western culture. Charikleia Tsokani will discuss the rapid spread of noise in the modern world, which, she argues in her study, establishes a tyrannical order that threatens to suppress all artfully crafted or intelligible sound.
How does this affect our inner lives? And how much room does it leave us to reflect on our lives and listen for what Cavafy calls “the secret murmur of approaching events”?
A program about music, noise, and the need to preserve an inner space for thought and listening.
Produced and presented by Themis Rodamitis
