Marios Kampouris from Qatar on “Our Global Voice” | 01 July 2025

Marios Kampouris, a clinical and molecular geneticist at Sidra Hospital in Doha, Qatar, joined the studio and spoke about the personal story of a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) from a poor single-parent family who failed a school year in Greece and left the country in 1980 to study genetics in the United States, where he excelled. He shared his story on the radio program “Our Global Voice” on Voice of Greece with Dimitris Kontogiannis.
Mr. Kampouris did not hesitate to go to Saudi Arabia to help establish a genetics laboratory as part of a program during his time at Yale University. However, he always wanted to return to Greece. He attempted this for seven years, but the experience proved disappointing, as “Greece has other gods,” he said, referring to the lack of healthy competition. For this reason, he advises those returning to Greece who find that things are not as expected not to insist for more than two years, as it could lead to financial ruin. That’s why he accepted a job offer and moved to Qatar, where he still resides. He also spoke about the tremendous advances in genetics and the promising prospects offered by artificial intelligence in treating diseases caused by genetic mutations.
