Voice of Greece, ERT’s international radio service, honors Mikis Theodorakis, Greece’s most iconic composer, by celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth (29 July 2025) with a series of special tribute broadcasts.
Specifically:
On Saturday, 26 July 2025, from 17:00 to 18:00 Athens time, on the program “Narratives – Stories and Fairy Tales for All Ages” with Maria Karagiannaki Iona, young and adult listeners alike will have the chance to enjoy the music collection “40 Songs for Little Ones and Children”, released 31 years ago in 1994.
The album features the exceptional voices of the girls from the award-winning Children’s Choir of the Larissa Municipal Conservatory (D.O.L.), accompanied by the Conservatory’s Orchestra, under the direction of Dimitris Karvounis.
On Tuesday, 29 July, the composer’s birthday, from 23:00 to 01:00 Athens time, Voice of Greece will air a special archival episode of the show “Our Town”, dedicated to Mikis Theodorakis, curated and presented by Themis Rodamitis.
The episode features in-studio guests Margarita Theodorakis and Giorgos Theodorakis, the composer’s children. Margarita speaks about her book “Memories of a Girl”, which includes her unique experience of watching her father compose songs step by step—a deeply personal perspective on the life of the “archangel” of Greek musical culture.
Additionally, from 28 July to 1 August 2025, at 14:00 Athens time, the English-language show Greek Music Express with Hercules Economou will be dedicated to Mikis Theodorakis:
The tribute begins on Monday, 28 July, with instrumental interpretations of his songs by renowned virtuosos.
On Tuesday, 29 July, the timelessness of his music is brought to life through electronic remixes of classic pieces by contemporary DJs and younger artists.
On Wednesday, 30 July, the program highlights his international acclaim, featuring recordings in Italian, Dutch, and German by celebrated global performers.
On Thursday, 31 July, listeners will hear interpretations of Theodorakis’ songs by international stars, and on Friday, 1 August, the series concludes with recent re-recordings of the great composer’s music by outstanding Greek singers.
