From songs associated with Greece’s heroic struggle in 1940 to the stories of children living under occupation, Voice of Greece marks Ohi Day on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, with programming dedicated to remembrance, resistance, and solidarity. Music, literature, and storytelling bring the people and events of the era to life, sharing the enduring message of freedom and peace with Greeks around the world.
The day’s programming begins at 07:00 with “Greek Music Express”, hosted by Hercules Economou. Voice of Greece’s English-language program honors the struggle against fascism through Greek antiwar songs performed by Maria Dimitriadi, Manolis Lidakis, Giorgos Zografos, and Margarita Zorbala.
At 08:00, “Fair Winds and Following Seas” with Antonis Karagiannakis explores the history and traditions of the Presidential Guard in a special two-hour tribute. Panagiotis Moutsakis, who served as an Evzone, shares memories of his service and discusses the symbolism of the Evzone uniform, the demanding training, and the deep emotion of standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
At 12:00, Ariadni-Sofia Kouri connects the wartime history of the Pindus Mountains with the lives of their present-day inhabitants in the latest episode of “Ariadne’s Thread.” Argithea Mayor Andreas Stergiou speaks about those who remain committed to living, raising children, and tending their land in a place that offered refuge during the Occupation.
At 13:00, “Our Town”, hosted by Themis Rodamitis, presents a tribute from the Voice of Greece archives, featuring poems, literary texts, personal accounts, and songs about the struggles for freedom and justice.
Sofia Vembo takes center stage on “Voices and Music”, hosted by Alexis Kostas, from 17:00 to 19:00. Through stories and songs that lifted the spirits of an entire nation, this edition from the program’s archives traces the life and artistic career of the “Singer of Victory.”
At 22:00, on “Remarkable Personalities,” Stavroula Karali welcomes author Alexandra Mitsiali to discuss her award-winning novel “Barefoot Heroes” (“Ξυπολυτοι Ήρωες”) by Patakis Publishers. The program focuses on the children of the Papafio Orphanage who found themselves on the streets of Thessaloniki after German occupation forces requisitioned the building, and went on to form the “Barefoot Battalion.” Their story sheds light on the harsh realities of daily life under occupation and the power of friendship and solidarity.
All times are Athens time.
